The morphology-density relationship for clusters of galaxies revisited

چکیده

Back in 1990 Schombert andWest (ApJ 363, 331) reported the discovery of a morphology-density relation for clusters of galaxies analogous to the well established dependence of galaxy types on local galaxy density. Based on a sample of 206 Abell clusters they concluded that Rood-Sastry (RS) C and I types (round and irregular) were much more prevalent in lowdensity regions while L and F (linear and flattened) occurred predominantly in rich supercluster environments; they did not find any similar correlation either for RS cD and B types or for Bautz-Morgan types. Using a much more extended sample (541 Abell clusters) we show that there is no evidence of SW’s claimed correlation so that, on the basis of our analysis, we can conclude that the shape of clusters of galaxies is not determined by the local large-scale structure.

Scaling relations in dynamical evolution of star clusters

We have carried out a series of small scale collisional N-body calculations of single-mass star clusters to investigate the dependence of the lifetime of star clusters on their initial parameters. Our models move through an external galaxy potential with a logarithmic density profile and they are limited by a cut-off radius. In order to find scaling relations between the lifetime of star cluste...

Interactions of Galaxies in the Galaxy Cluster Environment

We study the dependence of galaxy properties on the clustercentric radius and the environment attributed to the nearest neighbor galaxy using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) galaxies associated with the Abell galaxy clusters. We find that there exists a characteristic scale where the properties of galaxies suddenly start to depend on the clustercentric radius at fixed neighbor environment. ...

The fraction of early-type galaxies in low-redshift groups and clusters of galaxies

We examine the fraction of early-type (and spiral) galaxies found in groups and clusters of galaxies as a function of dark matter halo mass. We use morphological classifications from the Galaxy Zoo project matched to halo masses from both the C4 cluster catalogue and the Yang et al. group catalogue. We find that the fraction of early-type (or spiral) galaxies remains constant (changing by less ...

Evolution since Z=1 of the Morphology–density Relation for Galaxies

We measure the morphology–density relation of galaxies at z=1 across the full three orders of magnitude in projected galaxy density available in low–redshift studies. Our study adopts techniques that are comparable with those applied at lower redshifts, allowing a direct investigation of how the morphological segregation of galaxies has evolved over the last 8 Gyr. Although the morphology–densi...

Mapping the Cosmic Web with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

Wide-angle, moderately deep redshift surveys such as that conducted as part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) allow study of the relationship between the structural elements of the large-scale distribution of galaxies – including groups, cluster, superclusters, and voids – and the dependence of galaxy formation and evolution on these enviroments. We present a progress report on mapping eff...
